Pumping Oil Sand Froth
ثبت نشده
چکیده
Froth is the basis to the extraction of bitumen from oil sand. Its components include sand, bitumen, water, and air. The technology of extraction and processing is evolving toward lower temperature of operation where the volumetric content of air and viscosity of bitumen challenge pumping. To improve the efficiency of froth handling pumps it is important to adapt the technology from other industries. This may include degassing while pumping with secondary vacuum impellers (expellers), recirculating a part of the slurry to the suction, or injecting external hot water. In an effort to reduce air locking problems and derating of performance, a special impeller for centrifugal pumps was developed. The impellers feature split vanes between the principal vanes. The design allows for adequate passageway for solids at the eye while reducing the formation of large pockets of air between the main vanes. Adequate vane thickness for principal and split vanes is maintained in this design to resist wear from sand.

Wettability alteration by magnesium ion binding in heavy oil/brine/chemical/sand systems—analysis of hydration forces
In laboratory sandpack tests for heavy oil recovery by alkaline flooding, it was found that wettability alteration of the sand had a significant impact on oil recovery. In this work, a heavy oil of 14 API was used to examine the effect of organic acids in the oil and water chemistry on wettability alteration. From interfacial tension measurements and sand surface composition analysis, it was c...
متن کاملAir and water flows in a large sand box with a two-layer aquifer system
The pumping of water from a sand box with a finer layer on the top was studied theoretically and experimentally. The sand box, saturated at its lower portion and initially in hydrostatic equilibrium, was pumped at constant rate. The results show that significant negative air pressure can be generated in the vadose zone during pumping. The negative air pressure increases quickly in the earlier s...
متن کاملA brief overview of the geology of heavy oil, bitumen and oil sand deposits
Introduction There are three major oil sand areas in Canada, all in Alberta. There is also an oil sand deposit on Melville Island in the Arctic. The three major oil sand areas are from highest to lowest volume of reserves-in-place (AEUB 2003) Athabasca, Cold Lake and Peace River oil sand areas notwithstanding that bitumen reserves are also evident in subcropping carbonate rocks in Athabasca and...
متن کاملMagnetic Separation in Sand Processing
Now that high quality reserves are diminishing and quality specifications are becoming more strict, more processing is required to maintain quality standards. Additional environmental pressures have also reduced the attractiveness and cost effectiveness of the chemical based froth flotation process. As a result there has been a resurgence of interest in the purely physical processes of gravity ...

Background: Sand production is an important factor affecting reservoir exploitation. Excessive sand production affects the oil well life, causes the damage to the oil recovery device and brings serious hidden danger in the process of safety production. Objective: This paper presents a sand content computation model for the crude oil, which uses the power of sand production and Parseval theorem,...
